Cops: Bullet fired through PSEG window

Police are trying to determine who fired a bullet through the window of a PSEG building in Melville barely three weeks after the utility took over from embattled LIPA on Long Island.
The shot is believed to have been fired sometime either late Tuesday or early Wednesday, officials said, and was reported by the utility in a 911 call to Suffolk County police at 9:50 a.m.
Police said an employee first discovered a hole in a picture frame inside the building and then noticed a hole through a nearby window. Investigators from the Second Squad then determined the holes were from a bullet.
In a statement released Wednesday afternoon, PSEG Long Island spokesman Jeffrey Weir said: "Absolutely, unequivocally, the safety of our customers and our employees is paramount."
Citing the ongoing investigation, Weir said he could not comment further.
The building, on Park Road, was previously operated by National Grid. PSEG took over from the Long Island Power Authority as of Jan. 1.
