Cops: Burglar alarm leads to drug find
A Water Mill man faces felony drug charges after police discovered marijuana plants growing in his basement after a burglar alarm went off, Southampton Town police said Monday.
The department's street crime unit executed a search warrant at the Water Mill home of Jonathan Kaye, 29, on Friday "after patrol officers discovered an illegal marijuana growing operation in the basement, while investigating a burglar alarm activation," police said in a news release.
"Items seized during the warrant execution included growing lamps, watering mechanisms, drying containers and numerous live marijuana plants, as well as an additional quantity of marijuana set to dry," the release said.
Kaye, who also has a Manhattan residence, turned himself in on Monday, police said, and was arrested.
He is charged with two counts of criminal possession of marijuana, both felonies, and growing marijuana without a license, a misdemeanor, police said.
Arraignment information was not immediately available.
