A pedestrian died after being struck at Veterans Memorial Highway and Fifth Avenue in Ronkonkoma. (Jan. 27, 2014) Credit: James Carbone

A bus driver was killed Monday morning when he was hit by a car while walking to work, police said.

Wayne Wickard, 69, of Commack, was struck at about 6:05 a.m. by a westbound 1998 Dodge Neon while crossing Veterans Memorial Highway at the intersection of Fifth Avenue, Suffolk County police said.

Wickard, a driver for Baumann & Sons Bus Co., was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Fifth Squad detectives are investigating the crash, in which the driver, Annette Agliato, 53, of Bohemia, was not injured, police said. She remained at the scene and was not charged, police said.

The Neon was impounded for a safety check.
