A 62-year-old pedestrian struck by a car in Sayville was in a coma Saturday evening after suffering major injuries, Suffolk police said.

Shamim Bezum, of Central Islip, was crossing the Sunrise Highway service road near Broadway Avenue shortly after 8 p.m. Friday when she was hit by an eastbound car, police said.

Bezum suffered head injuries, and pelvic and leg fractures, according to police. She was in critical condition Saturday at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center.

Police said the driver, Bonnie Gallagher, 51, of Centereach, was passing through a green light at the time of the accident.
