Cops: Calverton man arrested in acquaintance's shooting
A Calverton man was arrested Sunday evening and charged with reckless endangerment after police said he may have accidentally shot an acquaintance in the groin.
Riverhead Town police said Ryan R. Rose, 36, of Calverton Court in Calverton was arrested following the shooting, which happened just before 5 p.m. Police said officers found the victim, identified as Corey Whitney, 36, of Westhampton Beach, on the front lawn.
He had been shot once.
Whitney was treated at the scene by members of the Wading River Fire Department, then transported to Stony Brook University Medical Center, where he was treated and later released, police said.
Rose was arrested and charged with third-degree and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, as well as with second-degree reckless endangerment. Police said the shooting "appears to be accidental in nature," but said the investigation is continuing.
Arraignment details were not immediately available.
Police said they recovered "several firearms" from the residence - including the gun used in the shooting incident.
