Cops: Car crashes into Huntington store

A man driving a late-model black Nissan Maxima apparently lost control of the car Sunday and drove through the storefront of Provenance Antiques and Design on New York Avenue in Huntington, police said.

"I was sitting at my desk and it was like an explosion," said owner Peter Bisgeier, 69. "I looked up and there was a car in my store."

Bisgeier, of Northport, said he was alone in the store and was not hurt, nor was there any immediately obvious damage to his merchandise, though his front window was shattered.

"If he had come in any farther," Bisgeier said, "it would have been a disaster."

Suffolk County police said the crash happened about 2:20 p.m. The cause of the accident, in which the rear of the Nissan was driven into the shop, was undetermined, they said late Sunday. Police said they had no information on the driver, but he was not injured and no charges were filed.

Matt Albala, 23, was across the street and said the man appeared to have stopped to park, and "before you could blink, he was through the window. . . . There was glass everywhere."

Ryan Hershkowitz and Sarah Martin, both 23, were working at a business next door when they heard a loud noise that sounded like "a waiter or waitress dropping a tray of glasses," Hershkowitz said. He said the pair rushed outside and found people surrounding the Nissan, which was sticking out of the storefront.

"I couldn't believe it," he said. "The driver was still in the car. He was very alert, but very shaken up."
