Cops: Car ends up in hole after crash

Police said a vehicle knocked down a utility pole and a fire hydrant was broken in a West Babylon crash. Water streaming from that hydrant caused a hole to form in the road and the car needed to be pulled from the hole, police said. (July 16, 2012) Credit: Paul Mazza
A car involved in an early-morning accident in West Babylon ended up in a hole -- the result of street flooding from a fire hydrant broken in the crash, police said.
Suffolk County police said the driver of the car was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip after the one-car accident on Little East Neck Road near Rutland Road at 1 a.m.
The driver suffered undisclosed injuries, police said.
Police said the car crashed into a utility pole and the hydrant, which then flooded the road -- creating a hole.
Photographs from the scene showed the front half of the car submerged in the hole.
Police said emergency crews replaced the broken utility pole and shut down the hydrant.
The driver was not charged.
