Central Islip man burglarized 7 businesses, say cops
A Central Islip man is facing felony charges for a string of commercial burglaries, police said Saturday.
John Sheats, 35, was arrested Friday morning by police responding to a burglary alarm at the Madison Steak House, 670 Motor Pkwy. in Hauppauge, Suffolk police said.
When an officer arrived at about 5 a.m., he saw a man leaving the back of the restaurant with cash, according to police. The officer struggled with the suspect, who managed to run away.
A police dog and helicopter searched the area and found the man hiding in bushes nearby, police said.
Sheats was arrested and charged with seven counts of third-degree burglary, one count of third-degree attempted burglary and resisting arrest, police said.
The burglaries started May 9 with a break-in at a business on Route 112 in Medford. Other charges involved commercial burglaries in Coram, Nesconset, Village of the Branch and Hauppauge, police said.
Sheats is scheduled to be arraigned Sunday in First District Court in Central Islip.
