A Greenport man, frustrated with how school officials were dealing with his child, was arrested Monday after he left a threatening statement on a school voice mail answering system, police said.

Michael O'Brien, 54, was charged with aggravated harassment, a misdemeanor, after he surrendered to Southold Town police. Arraignment details were not immediately available. A police spokesman said O'Brien was released on his own recognizance.

The arrest involved a phone call to Greenport High School principal Leonard Skuggevik, police said.

O'Brien declined to comment, while Greenport school district Superintendent Michael Comanda did not return calls Tuesday.

Southold police Capt. Frank Kruszeski said the incident involved "a parent upset over the school's dealing with their child." He said that O'Brien was out of town when the call was placed -- and said O'Brien left a voice-mail message.

Kruszeski said he could not provide additional details.

"He's frustrated over the situation," Kruszeski said of events leading to the call by O'Brien, adding: "He just lost his perspective for a moment."

Kruszeski said that once school officials notified police of the voice-mail message, an investigator spoke with O'Brien, who agreed to surrender at police headquarters.
