Cops: Death in Selden blaze ruled accidental
Suffolk police ruled Amy Yeung's death an accident, but a recently released Brookhaven Town fire marshal report on the cause of the fire that killed the Selden resident is inconclusive.
Fire officials were unable to determine the source of the fire, saying they could not eliminate as causes cigarette smoking, a portable space heater or a halogen lamp, the town's report states.
The report does not mention water pressure in a fire hydrant at the scene; volunteer firefighters said a lack of pressure made fighting the blaze more difficult. Fire officials have said hydrant water pressure did not drop until Yeung, 29, who died of smoke inhalation, had been pulled from the building.
Suffolk police said arson and homicide squads investigated Yeung's death for several months. Police sources declined to comment beyond saying there will be no criminal charges. "It's closed noncriminal, as an accidental death," Det. Lt. Gerard Pelkofsky said.
