A man was drunk when he was arrested on the westbound Long Island Expressway late Monday night, charged also with leaving the scene of an accident that injured a bicyclist in Riverhead, Riverhead Town police said.

Robert Michael, 47, of West Fifth Street in Deer Park, was arrested at 11 p.m. on charges of driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident, police said.

The bicyclist, identified by police as Leslie Harris, 40, of Village Drive in Ridge, was taken by the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps to the Peconic Bay Medical Center with what police called "non-life-threatening injuries."

Police said the accident occurred on County Route 58 just west of the McDonald's in Riverhead and that responding officers put out an alert describing the vehicle believed to be involved, based on interviews with witnesses. A short time later, police said, a State Police unit found the vehicle on the Long Island Expressway -- the trooper making the arrest after a field investigation.

Arraignment details were not immediately available.

Police said the vehicle was impounded.
