A 44-year-old Southampton man was arrested by state police troopers in his car in the driveway of a local home after, they said, he fled from a Town of Riverhead officer Saturday.

Carl Morgan of Hillcrest Terrace kept "reaching down between the car seats" despite being ordered to show his hands by troopers, state police said in a Monday news release.

Those troopers later recovered "a plastic bag with cocaine" from the car, police said.

Morgan was arrested and charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest, unlawfully fleeing a police officer and traffic violations. Arraignment information was not immediately available.

The arrest took place at 12:39 a.m., police said.

Police said Morgan was driving a dark-colored Lexus when a Riverhead police unit attempted to make a traffic stop. The officer called for assistance and the state police responded and the car was located in the driveway of a home on Fanning Boulevard in Riverhead.
