A Southold man was arrested on a drunken driving charge early Friday after he sped through the Riverhead traffic circle and struck a curb, State Police said.

Troopers instructed Paul Reinckens, 24, to pull onto the shoulder of County Route 104 after he hit the curb at 2:05 a.m. in his gray Mercury and stopped in the roadway, police said in a news release.

Troopers "detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage," and Reinckens failed sobriety tests, so he was charged with driving while intoxicated, police said.

The driver complained of chest pains and was evaluated at Peconic Bay Medical Center and released, State Police said. Reinckens, who also was charged with speeding, is scheduled to appear Feb. 13 in Southampton Town Court, police said.
