Cops: Driver charged with DWI after wrong-way crash on Sunrise
A Wyandanch man was arrested and charged with drunken driving and reckless endangerment after Suffolk County police said he drove his minivan the wrong way on Sunrise Highway late Sunday, crashing into a car in Bohemia.
Juan Maravilla, 56, of 76 Jefferson Ave., was charged with driving while intoxicated and second-degree reckless endangerment. His vehicle, a 1991 Toyota minivan, was impounded as evidence, police said.
Police said Jose Rivera, 26, of Shirley, the driver of the 1997 Honda struck by Maravilla, suffered minor injuries in the crash and declined medical attention at the scene.
A 911 call reported the wrong-way incident at 11:30 p.m., callers saying the minivan was headed eastbound in the westbound lanes on Sunrise.
But police said the van collided with the Honda before it could be stopped by highway patrol officers, the collision with the westbound Honda taking place near Exit 47A.
Maravilla is scheduled for arraignment Monday in First District Court in Central Islip.
