Cops: Driver charged with DWI in fatal LIE crash
A Levittown man was killed when his car was rear-ended on the Long Island Expressway in Dix Hills by a sport utility vehicle driven by a drunken driver, Suffolk County police said.
The victim was identified by police as Henry Lapine, 58.
Arrested at the scene late Sunday was Carleton English, 50, of Brentwood, police said. He was charged with driving while intoxicated.
The crash occurred on the westbound expressway at 10:42 p.m., police said.
It was then, police said, that English, driving a 2002 BMW, rear-ended the 2000 Audi sedan driven by Lapine, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
English was taken by the Dix Hills Rescue Squad to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow with a fractured leg and other injuries, police said. English, of 326 Barleau St., faces arraignment as soon as medically possible.
Police said detectives from the Vehicular Crime Unit are investigating the accident and are asking anyone with information to call 631-852-6555.
