Police are searching for the driver of a car who fled the scene of a crash that left two passengers seriously injured Monday night in Deer Park.

Suffolk County police did not immediately say whether the driver was a man or woman.

The crash involving an eastbound 2002 Hyundai Sonata and an 18-wheel Volvo tractor trailer occurred at 11:43 p.m. on Grand Boulevard near The Arches Circle.

Police said two passengers in the Hyundai -- Daniel Garcia, 20, of North Babylon, and Jani Martinez, 33, of Bay Shore -- were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.

Garcia was listed in serious condition, police said, and Martinez was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The tractor trailer driver, identified as Christopher Bertovich, 49, of Pennsylvania, was not injured, police said.

But police said that the driver of the Hyundai fled on foot before officers arrived at the scene. The car was impounded.

Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to call First Squad detectives at 631-854-8152 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
