A man who was driving while intoxicated drove off the road in Orient, then struck a sign that read "Welcome to New York," police said Friday.

Steven Arnott, 57, of East Marion, was headed east on Route 25 in Orient about 1:15 a.m., police said. Arnott crashed into brush, backed out and struck the sign, police said.

After a stop by Southold Town police officers, he was arrested early Friday and charged with DWI, police said.

Arraignment details were not immediately available.
