Cops: Driver jumped from stolen moving car

The teenage driver of a stolen car -- along with his four passengers -- jumped from the moving vehicle in an attempt to evade the police in Bay Shore early Tuesday morning, Suffolk County police said.

It was 3:38 a.m. when Third Precinct Officer Christopher Coyne, in his patrol car, tried to pull over a 1995 Nissan Maxima on Montauk Highway after he observed a vehicle and traffic violation, police said.

With the Nissan still in motion, the driver, a male passenger and three female passengers jumped out and headed north on Penataquit Avenue, police said.

"Officer Coyne managed to stop the Maxima, put it in park, and caught up to three female passengers who had fled the vehicle," a police report said Tuesday.

The officer broadcast a description over the radio of the driver and another male passenger who fled on foot, and patrol and canine officers searched the area. Patrol Officer Edward Rose, also of the Third Precinct, caught Demorne Jack, who was identified as the driver of the Maxima, police said.

Jack, 17, of 1014 Wilson Blvd., Central Islip, was charged with criminal possession of stolen property and reckless endangerment. Police said Tuesday that he would be held overnight at the Third Precinct and was scheduled for arraignment Wednesday in First District Court, Central Islip.
