A sweep of lockers Thursday at Sachem North High School led to the arrest of a student on a drug possession charge, thanks to Bema, the canine section's drug-sniffing German Shepherd, Suffolk County police said.

Police conducted the drug sweep of lockers at the school at 212 Smith Rd. in Lake Ronkonkoma beginning at about 9 a.m., at the request of the school's administration, police said.

The sweep also included Suffolk County's Crime Section, police said.

Bema and Police Officer William Krolikiewicz found marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the locker of a student, a 16-year-old boy, police said.

When Bema, a male, came across the suspect's locker, he "displayed a distinct change in body language and breathing and began to scratch at a locker," according to a news release.

School security personnel then conducted a hand search of the locker, uncovering the marijuana and drug paraphernalia, police said.

The unidentified student is charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and will appear in court at a later date, police said.
