A Mastic Beach man is facing DWI charges after smashing his car into the back of an unoccupied Suffolk County Police Department vehicle, officials said.

Paul Colon, 32, of McKinley Drive, was arrested shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday after he crashed his 1997 Ford Escort into a marked Seventh Precinct patrol car, Suffolk police said.

Police arrived on the scene moments later and charged Colon with driving while intoxicated.

Colon, who was the only person in the vehicle, was not injured. He was to be arraigned Saturday in First District Court in Central Islip.

The police car suffered major damage, police said, and was towed to a site in Westhampton.
