Cops: Drunken driver slams pickup into school bus, flees

A Commack man was driving drunk in his pickup truck Tuesday morning when he hit a school bus in Smithtown carrying nearly two dozen children and then drove off, Suffolk County police said.

None of the 23 children and three adults on the Three Village Central School District bus was injured, police said.

The Dodge pickup driver, Robert Slavonik, 44, of 54 Marvin Lane, was arrested after police found him in his driveway and charged with leaving the scene of an incident without reporting it and driving while intoxicated, police said in a news release.

He was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Central Islip.

Slavonik was coming out of a Dunkin' Donuts parking lot at 235 Route 25A, just west of Edgewood Avenue, at about 9:45 a.m. when he struck the bus, which was traveling west on Route 25A, police said.

He sped off, but a witness reported the truck's plate number to police. When officers arrived at his home, police said, Slavonik was sitting in the driver's seat of his truck, in the driveway.
