An intoxicated Islandia man drove straight into a the bedroom of a West Babylon home early Sunday morning, missing the occupied bed by inches, authorities said.

Martin Diaz, 21, was driving a 2001 Nissan Maxima at about 5 a.m. Sunday when he suddenly veered into a home on Belmont Avenue, police said. The front end of the car crashed into the side of the house, coming to a stop six inches away from where a woman was sleeping in a bed, said John Schneidawin, chief of department of the North Babylon Fire Company.

"It was pretty close," Schneidawin said.

Schneidawin said no one in the house was injured, and Diaz was able to get out of the car on his own.

Police arrested Diaz and charged him with DWI and resisting arrest. Diaz was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.
