Cops: DWI charge for driver who slammed car into Hampton Bays house
A Southampton man faces a drunken driving charge after crashing his car into a house in Hampton Bays while going in reverse, police said Tuesday.
Geoffrey Croke, 48, was arrested Monday after the accident shortly after 4 p.m. on Oakhurst Road, Southampton Town police said. No one in the house was injured, "and the structure sustained moderate damage," police said.
Responding officers determined that Croke "had apparently backed his vehicle up at a high rate of speed, striking a fence and a tree, and then went over a retaining wall and struck the lower portion of the house," police said.
Croke, who was not injured, was charged with driving while intoxicated, held overnight and arraigned in Southampton Town Justice Court, police said. Arraignment details were not immediately available.
