Ransom Soper was arrested and charged with DWI after his passenger was seriously injured when his vehicle struck a pole in Mastic Beach. (Dec. 24, 2013) Credit: SCPD

A motorist was driving drunk when he crashed into a utility pole in Mastic Beach on Tuesday morning, seriously injuring his passenger, Suffolk police said.

Ransom Soper, 22, of Bellport, was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in Patchogue and his passenger airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, police said.

Soper was driving a Ford Mustang south on Mastic Road when he crashed into a pole at the intersection of Robinwood Drive at 7:45 a.m.

Soper, of Bieselin Road, was charged with driving while intoxicated and was held overnight for arraignment Wednesday./
