A thief in a Yankees cap robbed a Lake Grove bank Saturday morning -- and a dye pack the teller stashed with the loot exploded as the thief fled, Suffolk County police said.
Detectives say the robber is still at large.
The robbery began at about 10:25 a.m. at People's United Bank, 2921 Middle Country Rd. The robber, who did not display a weapon, handed the teller a note demanding cash. The teller gave him the money, but also included the red dye pack, which exploded as the man left the bank with the cash in his hands. He dropped some of the bills after the explosion.
The robber fled in a gray sedan driven by a woman west on Middle Country Road. He's described as clean-shaven and in his late 20s to late 30s. He wore a gray hoodie, dark sunglasses and dark pants. He has a medium build and is 6-foot-2 or 6-foot-3.
Detectives did not describe the getaway driver. Police would not say how much cash the robber got.
A dye pack is an incendiary aerosol device banks sometimes include with the proceeds of robberies. It helps foil robberies when the pack explodes and marks both the cash and the robber with dye.
