Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers rescued eight adults early Saturday from the waters of the Great South Bay off Fire Island after their boat began taking on water.

Marine Bureau Officers John Mullins and Donald Moore discovered the 32-foot Carrera boat at 2:22 a.m. a third of a mile north of Ocean Beach. Both engines of the boat had failed, police said.

The officers tied the Carrera to their vessel, a Marine X-Ray, and towed it back to Ocean Beach, police said. The officers then helped remove water from the boat.

The boat operator, Paul Collins, 23, of East Islip, was issued summonses for an unregistered boat and nonfunctional navigation lights.
