Police are investigating an early morning shooting that left a man wounded in North Babylon on Wednesday.

Suffolk County police said Shawn Smith, 26, of Elmont, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip with non-life-threatening injuries -- after being shot in the buttocks and lower back.

Police said a First Precinct officer found Smith after responding to a 911 call reporting a man had been shot on Weeks Road in North Babylon at 2:48 a.m.

No additional details were available. Police ask anyone with information about the shooting to call First Squad detectives at 631-854-8152 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
