A Speonk man was killed last week when his wife, driving a 2008 Hyundai, lost visibility in a street sweeper’s “cloud of dust” and hit the sweeper, Southampton Town police said Wednesday.

Grace Larson, 72, driving north Thursday on Speonk-Riverhead Road just south of Sunrise Highway in Speonk, struck the Southampton town sweeper while it was cleaning sand off the road, police said in a news release.

Her husband, Larry Larson, 72, who suffered injuries in the crash, was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly after.

Grace Larson was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center with minor injuries.

Unable to see the crash due to the dust, a BMW driver behind Larson drove through the crash rubble, but was uninjured, police said.
