The body of an unidentified man was discovered in a wooded area of Shirley Wednesday evening, Suffolk police said.

Homicide detectives are investigating, but the cause of death is undetermined, police said.

The body of man between the ages of 20 and 40 was found by people walking near William Floyd Parkway, about 100 yards north of Roberts Road in Shirley, police said.

Det. Lt. Gerard Pelkofsky said the body would be taken to the Suffolk medical examiner's office to determine the cause of death.

"It's totally undetermined at this point of time," Pelkofsky said. "It could turn out to be anything."
