Cops: Fire destroys Centereach home

Volunteers from four fire departments in Suffolk County couldn't save a Centereach home from a fully engulfed blaze Monday night, but six occupants in the house, including two children, escaped without major injuries.

Police and fire officials said the blaze was reported in a 911 call at 11:36 p.m. Police said four adults and two children were in the home on Sunset Drive, and managed to escape without injury -- but said one adult later sustained an arm injury while banging on a window to warn the others.

That man was taken to a hospital for treatment of the arm injury, police said. His condition was not immediately known.

Firefighters from Centereach, Farmingville, Selden and Ronkonkoma battled the blaze, which police said destroyed the home. Police said the Brookhaven fire marshal determined the fire began in the basement -- and said it "appears to be accidental."
