A 31-year-old Flanders man arrested by police on a drunken-driving charge Sunday had previously been deported by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, police said.

Riverhead Town police could not immediately say where Samuel Paredes-Nij had been deported to - and it also was not immediately clear if ICE officials are going to begin additional proceedings.

Paredes-Nij was stopped Sunday at 10:20 p.m. near the intersection of Wood Road Trail and Riverside Avenue in Flanders after he failed to use the proper lane of travel and ran through a stop sign, police said.

A subsequent investigation found an open alcoholic beverage container in the vehicle, found that Paredes-Nij did not have a license, and found he was intoxicated, police said.

Later tests found Paredes-Nij had a blood-alcohol content of greater than .18 percent - more than twice the legal limit - and uncovered the prior deportation, police said.

He was charged with aggravated DWI, DWI, failure to use a designated lane, failure to obey a stop sign, open alcoholic container in a motor vehicle and unlicensed operation, police said.

Arraignment details were not immediately available.
