Cops: Flanders teen chases burglar in his home, leading to suspect's arrest
Calling him "a brave young man," police said a 16-year-old boy confronted a burglar in his Flanders home last week and chased the suspect to his getaway car -- getting a description of the vehicle, which led to the man's arrest.
Southampton Town Police said Tuesday the burglary occurred last Thursday and said the subsequent investigation led to the arrest of Wade Hackett, 43, of Greenport, who has been charged with two counts of second-degree burglary.
Police said the burglary occurred at a home on Glider Avenue and said the 16-year-old confronted the man when he arrived home. But Hackett fled, police said, pursued by the teen through an adjacent property. Police said Hackett refused to relinquish stolen goods, which included electronics and jewelry, before reaching his car.
Based on a vehicle description, police said, the man was arrested about eight miles from the scene and he was later identified by the teen.
An investigation determined the man had entered both the main residence of the home and an apartment and had stolen goods from both, police said.
Hackett was arraigned in Southampton Town Justice Court and bail was set at $2,000. He was represented by Legal Aid, which does not comment on cases.
