Cops: GPS tracks stolen truck; Cutchogue man arrested
The owner of a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was thankful for OnStar Thursday.
Southold Town police said the GPS vehicle security system led them straight to the truck after it was stolen from a parking lot in the King Kullen Plaza - and within about one hour the car thief had been arrested and the truck returned.
The incident occurred at about 8 p.m. Thursday.
Police said it was then that the truck was taken from the shopping center. But the truck owner told police the pickup was equipped with OnStar - and police soon tracked the truck to Nassau Point.
There they found the truck leaving a driveway at 8520 Nassau Point Rd., initiated a traffic stop and arrested the driver, Frank V. Dipillo, 31, of 1285 Bayberry Rd., Cutchogue.
He was charged with third-degree unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and also had an outstanding bench warrant.
He is scheduled for arraignment Friday.
The truck was returned to its owner "with no apparent damages" shortly after 9 p.m.
