At least two people were taken to hospitals following a collision between a school bus and a tractor-trailer on a rural road in Riverhead.

A dispatcher for Maryhaven, a program for people with special needs, says 6 people were on the bus, along with 2 staffers. Two of the passengers were taken to hospitals for treatment.

Their conditions were not immediately known.

The crash happened about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday on Sound Avenue in the town of Riverhead.

Police Chief David Hegermiller says the bus and tractor-trailer may have sideswiped each other.

He said a helicopter was taking some victims from the scene.

The identity or condition of the tractor-trailer driver was not immediately known.
