Cops: Laurel mom charged with DWI had girl in car

A 43-year-old woman was arrested, charged with aggravated drunken driving and endangering the welfare of a child, after officers stopped her car on Peconic Bay Boulevard in Laurel Sunday evening -- and found her intoxicated, her 3-year-old daughter in the vehicle, police said.

Alisa Siegell of Laurel was charged with DWI, endangering the welfare of a child and aggravated DWI under Leandra's Law, which makes it a felony, even on first offense, to drive drunk with a passenger under the age of 16 in the vehicle.

Southold police said officer Richard Jernick spotted Siegell's vehicle cross from the westbound lane of Peconic Bay Boulevard into the eastbound lane at about 7:45 p.m. Sunday and initiated a traffic stop.

During his investigation, police said Jernick determined Siegell was drunk -- the woman "failing several roadside sobriety tests," according to a statement from police.

Arraignment details were not immediately available.

Leandra's Law is named for Leandra Rosado, an 11-year-old girl killed when a van she was riding in overturned on the Henry Hudson Parkway in October 2009. Seven other children were injured.

The driver, the mother of one of those injured, was charged with manslaughter.
