Two sisters died in a suicide pact Tuesday in the hamlet of Riverside, Southampton Town police said.

Police said they responded to a request to check the welfare of the sisters, ages 41 and 45, at their home. When they arrived, they detected a strong odor of propane coming from the home, police said.

Police requested assistance from the Riverhead Fire Department and the Southampton Town fire marshal's office. Riverhead firefighters ventilated the residence, allowing police to enter.

Documents recovered in the residence revealed the sisters had agreed to end their lives, police said, but neither contributed to the other's death.

The bodies were sent to the Suffolk County medical examiner's office to determine cause of death.

Southampton Town police said in a news release they would provide no further information or details about the deaths.
