Cops: Man arrested after iPhone robbery at ecology center
A North Patchogue man was arrested Friday morning about five minutes after robbing a woman off her iPhone at the Town of Brookhaven's Wildlife and Ecology Center in Holtsville, police said.
Suffolk County police received a call at 10:45 a.m. about a man who stole the phone from the victim, who police said "was exercising just off the running track" at the center.
"The woman was threatened with a knife, and the man fled on foot," police said in a news release.
Fifth Precinct Officer Matthew Sforza was responding to the call when he "noticed a man running on Prince Street, North Patchogue, that fit the description of the suspect," police said.
The officer caught that suspect, Abdias Alvarez-Jolon, 22, at about 10:50 a.m., police said.
Alvarez-Jolon, of 209 Risley Rd., North Patchogue, was charged with first-degree robbery and is scheduled to be arraigned Saturday at First District Court in Central Islip.
Any witnesses to the alleged robbery are urged to call Fifth Squad detectives at 631-854-8552.
