A Newark man who was acting "suspiciously" on a Penn Station-bound train Tuesday morning was found carrying a cash register stolen from a Patchogue beauty store, Suffolk police said.

Cory Ford, 34, of New Jersey, was arrested as he was leaving a Long Island Rail Road train at the Jamaica station by Metropolitan Transportation Authority police at 6:48 a.m., carrying the cash register under his arm, police said. It had been stolen the previous night from Eloisa Beauty Center on Medford Avenue, police said.

MTA sources said Ford told police he had bought the cash register at a Walmart store but he couldn't produce a receipt to verify the purchase.

Police said Ford broke a window at the beauty shop Monday night and left with the entire cash register around 9:30 p.m.

Ford, who was turned over to Suffolk police, was charged with third-degree burglary, and will be held overnight at the Fifth Precinct. He is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Dec. 4.
