A man who was asked to leave a cafe on Main Street in Greenport grabbed the owner in a headlock, punched him and threatened to stab him with a pen, police said.

When Southold Town police arrived at the scene at the local gelato bar at about 2:45 p.m. Thursday, they said Donald Beckley resisted arrest and even grabbed one of the officer's guns, unsnapping the holster.

Police said Beckley was subdued using pepper spray and a stun gun and was taken to Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport for treatment before being taken to police headquarters, where he was booked.

Beckley, 57, of Greenport, was charged with menacing, resisting arrest, attempted grand larceny and harassment. He was arraigned Friday and held without bail.

It was not immediately clear what sparked the incident.
