A Huntington Station man is scheduled to be arraigned on an attempted robbery charge Thursday after police said he threatened a man with a hammer while trying to take his wallet and car keys Wednesday afternoon.

Thomas Rivas, 19, of 54 Folsom Ave., faces first-degree attempted robbery and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon charges at his arraignment in First District Court in Central Islip, Suffolk police said.

Officers said that Rivas confronted a man who was retrieving an item out of the trunk of his car in the Waldbaum's parking lot at 60 Wall St. in Huntington, asking the man for his wallet and keys while threatening him with a roofing hammer.

The victim ran away and called police. Second Precinct Crime Control Officers Christopher Timpone and Michelle McHugh patrolled the area and spotted someone who they said matched the description of the suspect at the Southdown Market at 205 Wall St. in Huntington and arrested Rivas at about 2 p.m.

Rivas was being held at the Second Precinct overnight. His attorney, Gregory Kalmar of Huntington, declined to comment.
