A woman was seriously injured and her husband was charged with driving while intoxicated after a two-car accident Tuesday evening in East Farmingdale, Suffolk County police said.

The crash occurred on Wellwood Avenue at Long Island Avenue just before 7:45 p.m., police said. Jeffery Hirsch, 57, of Longshore Street in Bay Shore, was arrested after being treated for minor injuries at St. Joseph Hospital in Bethpage, police said. He was charged with DWI and is scheduled for arraignment Wednesday in First District Court, Central Islip. Police did not provide more details on the arrest.

His wife, Pauline Hirsch, 57, remains in serious condition at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow.

She was originally transported to St. Joseph by East Farmingdale Fire Department Rescue, but was later transferred.

The driver of the other car, identified by police as Ronald Giovelli, 40, of Gleeland Street, Deer Park, and a passenger in his car who was not identified also were taken to St. Joseph with what police described as "non-life-threatening" injuries.

Police said Giovelli was driving a 2001 Suzuki Vitara southbound on Wellwood and had stopped to make a left onto Long Island Avenue when the car was struck in the rear by the 1999 Subaru Forester driven by Hirsch.

Both cars were impounded for safety checks.

The accident caused traffic delays in the area for more than an hour, police said.
