Cops: Man charged with DWI ignored warning
A Deer Park man who was told by a trooper Sunday not to drive his Jeep because he was intoxicated was arrested a half-hour later in Commack on a drunken driving charge, State Police said.
A trooper driving southbound on Crooked Hill Road about 4:45 p.m. saw a man outside a black Jeep in a parking lot south of the Long Island Expressway, according to a news release.
The trooper questioned the man, who said he was trying to get inside the locked vehicle without having his keys. The trooper said it was "evident" the man, Umberto Correia, 38, was intoxicated.
The trooper then "advised him not to drive and call for someone to pick him up," police said.
At about 5:15 p.m., the same trooper saw Correia driving the Jeep north on Crooked Hill Road near the expressway, "drifting out of his lane," police said.
The trooper pulled the Jeep over. Correia "exhibited poor motor coordination, had slurred speech, and bloodshot and watery eyes," the release said.
Correia failed sobriety tests and was arrested, police said. He produced a breath-analyzer reading of .21 percent, more than two times the legal limit of .08, police said.
Correia is charged with DWI and traffic violations and his scheduled to appear at First District Court in Central Islip on Feb. 21.
