Cops: Man drives SUV past road-closed sign, ends up in Shinnecock Bay
A 63-year-old Riverhead man had to be rescued by Southampton Town bay constables Tuesday after police said he drove his sport utility vehicle around "Road Closed" barricades on Dune Road -- and his vehicle began "floating" into Shinnecock Bay.
Southampton Town Police said the incident occurred just before 12:30 p.m. just west of the Ponquogue Bridge.
Police said the driver, identified as Michael Andriole, called 911 to report that he was on Dune Road -- and that his 2008 Mercedes-Benz SUV was "sinking and floating into the bay."
Police and constables responded and found Andriole and his vehicle partially submerged in the bay.
Andriole was rescued by police and constables with the help of volunteers from the Hampton Bays Fire Department. Police said Andriole's vehicle was removed from the water by Shoreline Towing.
Police said the road had been closed because of "severe flooding," but said Andriole attempted to drive west after going around barricades. He was not charged with any criminality, police said.
