A Southampton man police said was going the wrong way Friday on Sunrise Highway was arrested on a drunken-driving charge after State Police blocked traffic near Exit 65 in Hampton Bays, forcing him to stop his car.

State Police said an off-duty Southampton Town police officer made an emergency call to say a wrong-way driver was in the eastbound lanes of the highway at about 12:35 a.m.

Troopers then blocked traffic at the overpass near Exit 65, State Route 24, and pulled over the vehicle.

John F. Jensen, 72, was unaware he was driving in the wrong direction, police said. Jensen was arrested on a DWI charge after failing sobriety tests, according to a news release. He refused a breath-analyzer test, police said.

His arraignment information at Southampton Town Court was not immediately available Friday.
