A Shelter Island man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated in Southold with his young child in the car, police said Wednesday.

Raymond Sanwald, 33, was operating a 2002 Dodge on Route 48 near Ackerly Pond Lane about 5 p.m. Monday when the vehicle was stopped, Southold Town police said.

Sanwald's 3-year-old son was in a car seat in the back of the car, police said, and Sanwald was also charged with violating Leandra's Law.
