A Huntington Station man was arrested after he fled officers who attempted to initiate a routine traffic stop on East Jericho Turnpike in South Huntington on Friday, police said.

Michael Detaldi, 48, was charged with reckless driving and with unlawfully fleeing a police officer after a pursuit that involved an aviation unit and a canine unit, Suffolk County police said.

Police said officers attempted to stop Detaldi, who was driving a white Dodge van, for a traffic infraction at about 12:45 a.m. on East Jericho Turnpike, but the man fled.

Police said Detaldi eventually stopped the van on New York Avenue near Vermont Street in Melville where he then fled on foot. Second Precinct officers were joined by a helicopter and canine unit before locating and arresting Detaldi. The reason for the initial traffic stop was not immediately clear and it was not clear what led Detaldi to flee those officers.

Detaldi is scheduled for arraignment Friday in First District Court in Central Islip.
