A Brookhaven man was arraigned Wednesday morning on a charge of second-degree assault for what Southold police said was his involvement in the baseball-bat beating of a man in Greenport on Jan. 22.

Maki T. Haynes, 29, was held on $10,000 bail following his arraignment in Southold Town Justice Court. Arraignment details were not available.

Southold Det. Sgt. John Sinning said the incident began in a 7-Eleven in Greenport, spilled out into the parking lot and ended on a road leading to a nearby beach. Sinning said the attackers "were known" to the victim, a man who was not identified. There was at least one other attacker involved, Sinning said, and possibly two.

Police said they anticipate additional arrests.

The victim suffered broken bones, swelling of the brain and a broken tooth in the attack, police said. Sinning said the man has been released from the hospital and is recovering. The progress of his recovery was unknown.

Sinning said the motive for the attack was not clear.

"We're not sure, exactly, what it was about," he said.
