A verbal altercation early Friday at an Islip Terrace gas station culminated in one man shooting another in the abdomen a short distance away, Suffolk County police said.

The victim, identified only as a 38-year-old man, was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The victim is from Bay Shore, according to police.

The shooter fled the scene on Irving Place near Carleton Avenue, police said.

Police said the 12:15 a.m. shooting remains under investigation.
