Cops: Man killed on Sagtikos stabbed wife

The pedestrian who was killed Friday night on the Sagtikos State Parkway in Edgewood was on the run from Suffolk cops for allegedly stabbing his wife minutes earlier, the police department said Saturday.

Authorities identified him as Carl G. Beard, 48.

The wife's nonfatal stabbing and the man's death happened less than 20 minutes apart, according to police.

About 8:42 p.m., Suffolk officers went to the home where police say Beard wounded his wife, on Gardiner Drive in North Bay Shore, to investigate the stabbing.

Then, just after 9 p.m., State Police said, Beard was struck on the parkway by a 2010 Hyundai near Exit S3, Pine Aire Drive, which is near Brentwood and Bay Shore.

Suffolk police were not physically pursuing Beard when the vehicle hit him, a police spokesman said Saturday

State Police, which have jurisdiction over state parkways, did not release the driver's name and wouldn't say whether any charges would be filed.

The wife, Daphne Beard, 47, was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore with non-life-threatening injuries, the Suffolk police spokesman said.

At the hospital Saturday afternoon, a man, who identified himself as a reverend there to visit Daphne Beard, stood outside her room and said she's recovering well but probably wouldn't be released that day.

On the block Saturday, neighbor Marion Brewster said the Beards have three children, and they seemed happy; there were no signs of marital troubles.

"You never know what goes on inside people's houses," Brewster said. She added: "This was just a shocker to everybody."

Two housekeepers from Teresa's Family Cleaning, hired to clean the premises, didn't know there had been a stabbing inside when they showed up at the gray, one-story house Saturday.

Told there was blood inside, cleaning lady Brittany Anderson said: "We're not supposed to handle anything that's a hazard."
