A 36-year-old man was in critical but stable condition after he was found shot several times early Thursday on the Shinnecock Reservation in Southampton, police said.

State Police did not release the identity of the victim.

Police said the shooting occurred at about 6 a.m. on Old Soldiers Road, on reservation land, and that troopers learned of the shooting after a 911 call reported a man had been shot.

The victim was transported to Southampton Hospital via private vehicle after the shooting. Additional details were not immediately available -- and police asked that anyone with information call the Bureau of Criminal Investigations at the state police Riverside barracks at 631-208-9002.

All calls will remain confidential, police said.
